BOSTON ? The Cape Cod All-Stars beat South Shore on Wednesday to capture the Eastern Massachusetts State Senior Babe Ruth Championship.
With a 6-4 win over South Shore, the Cape Cod All-Stars advance to the New England Regionals, with a chance of qualifying for the Senior Babe Ruth World Series.
Regionals will be held beginning Thursday and run through next Sunday at Whitehouse Field in Harwich and Veterans Field in Chatham.
The Cape Cod All-Stars will open their regional schedule on Friday against the Western Massachusetts champion at 1 p.m. Team Cape Cod is hosting the regionals and will play the Vermont champion on Thursday at Whitehouse Field at 7 p.m.
Against South Shore, Jeremy Samoluk and Patrick Collins combined for five hits, both plating a run with a single in the All-Stars? two-run sixth inning. That inning broke a 4-all tie after South Shore scored twice in the third and fourth innings to knot things up. The Cape Cod All-Stars broke out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Samoluk went 3-for-4 while Collins was 2-for-4.
John Sheppard pitched the first four innings for the All-Stars while Joe Antosca finished the final three innings.
FUTURES COLLEGIATE BASEBALL: MV 13, Pittsfield 10
OAK BLUFFS ? Martha?s Vineyard took a 13-5 lead in the sixth and held on to survive a ninth-inning rally by Pittsfield to win 13-10 on Saturday in Futures Collegiate Baseball League action.
Vineyard Haven?s Tad Gold led Martha?s Vineyard (24-12) with two hits, including his second home run of the season and six RBIs from his No. 9 spot in the batting order.
Martha?s Vineyard scored five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take a 13-5 lead. Pittsfield (16-19) then scored five in the top of the ninth, but their rally stalled.
Brett Holmgren (Endicott) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scores while Gold, Nick Sanford (UMass), Eric Brenk (Wofford), Chris Miller (Seton Hill) and Kevin Foley (Wheaton) had two hits each.
SOCCER: Sandwich a winner on, off the field
The Sandwich fifth-grade soccer team finished off a successful season at the end of June, but its accomplishments during the spring extended way beyond the soccer field.
The club raised more than $2,200 toward the One Fund benefiting the Boston Marathon bombings over the course of two months through a variety of fundraising and donations.
On Friday, the club donated $2,202.50 to TD Bank, which has partnered with the One Fund. Eleven of the 15 girls on the team were for on hand for a ceremony at the TD branch in Sandwich, in which each member of the club was presented with a prize package.
The Sandwich fifth grade team went 7-1 under coach Renee Demarsh during the regular season and defeated Taunton in the finals to win the South Coast Soccer League?s U-11 Div. 1.
Sandwich advanced to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions in Lancaster at the end of June, where they went 0-2-1 in the U-12 Division.
The team was recently invited to participate in a ?Parade of Champions? at Gillette Stadium prior to the New England Revolution match against Houston on July 13.
