Even In Hollywood Pulp Fiction, More Can Mean A Lot Less

Machete Kills

  • Director: Robert Rodriguez

  • Genre: Action

  • Running Time: 107 minutes

Rated R for strong bloody violence throughout, language and some sexual content.

With: Danny Trejo, Mel Gibson, Demian Bichir, Michelle Rodriguez, Charlie Sheen

There's the strong silent type, and then there's the strong mute type. In Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills, journeyman tough-guy Danny Trejo skews toward the latter. If the recurring catchphrase in these films is "Machete don't ____" — as in, Machete don't text, Machete don't tweet, Machete don't die — the fact is that what Machete mostly don't do is speak.

At times, to be blunt, he comes off like a silent film star who's accidentally lumbered onto the set of a bloody, violent, thoroughly ridiculous talkie: reluctant to speak, sometimes a little confused by his surroundings.

He may be right to feel that way. The fact that Machete Kills even exists is the latest in an unlikely series of events that started with a jokey fake trailer in the 2007 double feature Grindhouse, from Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino; somehow the Machete films have become a franchise venture, making a leading man out of a guy who might otherwise have spent a career playing the snarling background heavy.

2010's Machete bucked the odds and managed to successfully re-create, at feature length, all the things that made that compact 2-minute ersatz trailer such fun. It worked both as a genuinely admiring homage to its grimy '70s vengeance-cinema roots and as a funny, self-aware recognition of that genre's inherent amateurish excesses. It even managed to work in some bluntly effective political commentary on immigration policy.

Sadly, Machete Kills proves that there's a limit to how thin the concept can be stretched. That limit is somewhere around the point where Charlie Sheen — playing the smoking, swearing, assault-rifle toting President of the United States — makes a joke playing into the "winning" meme he spawned in real life. The whole thing collapses, thereupon, into a heap of winking self-reference.

Sheen isn't the only bad-press-plagued celebrity a-gnawing at the scenery here, either. Mel Gibson steps in as villain Luther Voz, right-wing survivalist, military-industrial profiteer and smug one-percenter. Instead of a bunker stocked with canned goods and guns, he's got a whole space station meant to accommodate a privileged few should the nuclear gambit he's attempting to engineer on Earth come to fruition.

(Mexican laborers are being kidnapped to perform the station's menial functions — about the only significant remnant of the first film's political agenda.)

Averting nuclear winter is a big step up in assignments for Machete, the ex-Federale who last time around was tasked merely with foiling political scheming and a bit of personal vengeance. But this is a sequel, and everything has to be bigger and badder and bloodier. Even Machete's signature weapon has been souped up; now it comes in both an electrical model and a completely impractical triple-pronged switchblade version.

There's still a measure of fun to be had here, to be sure — Rodriguez looks for ever more creative ways for Machete to kill, beyond the standard beheadings and lengthwise bodily bisections, and there's a gag with a helicopter rotor that's truly inspired. And the revolving cast of actors filing extended cameos as the shape-shifting "El Camaleon" is, admittedly, an often hilarious touch.

But where the first film reflected its simple roots by not reaching for too much, here it too often feels like Rodriguez is trying too hard to impress. It's as if, after getting by on pure charm on the first date, he showed up for the second armed with flowers, chocolates, a teddy bear and a ring. It's just too much — and the excess is compounded by the need for digital effects without the budget to make them even slightly convincing.

The best moments in Machete Kills are the simple ones, like a playful jab at our expectations of gratuitous sex: It's there, but Rodriguez serves it up with a clever means of obscuring it. Also great is the trailer — of course it all comes back to a trailer — for the proposed third installment, Machete Kills Again ... In Space. But we might be better off if Rodriguez took a cue from his protagonist's less-is-more reticence, and let that one just remain a trailer.

Ruby scripting language makes embedded play

Popular scripting language Ruby is branching out into embedded applications, with an mruby version of the language. But the main Ruby variant is viewed by its founder as needing only minor improvements in upcoming versions.

Appearing Wednesday afternoon at a Ruby user site in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ruby founder Yukihiro Matsumoto talked of his latest project, mruby, the lightweight version of Ruby for embedded applications that was first released last year.  Mruby will vie with languages such as Java and C in the embedded space, but Matsumoto sees mruby as a superior language to Java -- at least when it comes to embedded development. He downplayed the usefulness of Java ME (Micro Edition), which is intended for embedded development, saying it was "not really Java."

Oracle lately has been pitching embedded Java for use in the so-called "Internet of things," which features a multitude of connected devices. Both ME and, to an extent, the standard edition of Java are being positioned for embedded systems. But the ME version does not have the Java ecosystem and requires more memory than C programs, Matsumoto said, at the offices of cloud-based transaction software company Coupa.

Embedded systems are getting bigger and bigger these days, and being featured in systems such automobiles, said Matsumoto. Mruby, with its flexibility and productivity benefits, can play a part in this, but it will not dominate, he said. "Most of the system will still be in C or C++." The next step for mruby is to improve its stability, Matsumoto said. Mruby is housed on GitHub.

For smartphone app development, there already is a bridge between mruby and Objective-C, Apple's programming language for the iPhone, making it possible to write iPhone apps in mruby, Matsumoto explained. Programs are written in mruby and compiled to binary code, which can access underlying Objective-C libraries. This usage of mruby, however, is still in an alpha stage of development.

Matsumoto also talked up the completeness of his Ruby reference implementation, CRuby 2.0, also known as Ruby 2.0. This upgrade was released in February and features garbage collection, for memory management, and keyword arguments, for being more descriptive about method calls. Matsumoto sees version 2.0 and its critical improvements as an important milestone. Later versions, such as 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3, will only need minor improvements, he said. Version 2.1 is due in December with even more improvements in garbage collection as well as literals capabilities, for mathematical programs.

Matsumoto started developing Ruby in 1993. "I designed Ruby as a hobby in the beginning," he said.  Matsumoto stressed enjoyment of the Ruby language as a benefit that produces motivated programmers.  "Motivated programmers become very productive."

Smartphone cradle, app detect toxins, bacteria

URBANA, Ill. (AP) ? Afraid there may be peanuts or other allergens hiding in that cookie? Thanks to a cradle and app that turn your smartphone into a handheld biosensor, you may soon be able to run on-the-spot tests for food safety, environmental toxins, medical diagnostics and more.

The handheld biosensor was developed by researchers at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. A series of lenses and filters in the cradle mirror those found in larger, more expensive laboratory devices. Together, the cradle and app transform a smartphone into a tool that can detect toxins and bacteria, spot water contamination and identify allergens in food.

Kenny Long, a graduate researcher at the university, says the team was able to make the smartphone even smarter with modifications to the cellphone camera.

Nicolas Cage and Paul Schrader Replace Harrison Ford and Nicolas Winding Refn for 'The Dying of the Light'

Nicolas Cage Director Paul Schrader is preparing for the theatrical and VOD release of his low-budget indie film The Canyons this weekend ? yeah, the movie with Lindsay Lohan. The filmmaker apparently likes the challenge of working with ?out there? actors, so naturally his next film will star Nicolas Cage. In Cage?s defense, there?s no way he could possibly be anywhere near as difficult as Lohan?

IndieWire spoke with Schrader last month and he revealed that his next project was a feature titled The Dying of the Light. Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn was originally linked to the project, but now Schrader will direct with Refn producing. At the time, Schrader hinted that he had an A-list actor on the line for the part ? so when he revealed recently that Nic Cage was going to star in his next production?.well, you don?t have to be Sherlock Holmes to connect the dots.

The film, based on a Schrader script, focuses on a CIA agent who loses his vision while working on a mission. Refn?s version was supposed to involve Harrison Ford, but now Ford is out and it appears as though Cage is in. This could be a good role for the mercurial actor, but I?d be more interested if Ford were still involved, honestly.

According to earlier Schrader comments, The Dying of the Light should start filming sometimes this winter.

Oil slips below $104 ahead of Fed, jobs data

The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) -- The price of oil fell below $104 a barrel on Tuesday as traders awaited comments from central banks as well as data releases later in the week, including U.S. jobs figures.

Benchmark oil for September delivery was down 64 cents to $103.91 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 15 cents to close at $104.55 on Tuesday. Brent crude, the benchmark for international crudes, fell 19 cents to $107.26 on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Losses were kept in check as traders waited for the Federal Reserve to give its latest appraisal of the U.S. economy and whether a change to the central bank's stimulus strategy is warranted. Fed officials are meeting Tuesday and Wednesday in Washington.

The Fed has been buying $85 billion of financial assets a month in an attempt to keep long-term borrowing rates low and help shore up the U.S. economic recovery. However, the Fed is widely expected to wind down the program later this year if the economy improves.

Oil prices have gotten a boost from the low interest rates, which have made commodities like oil more attractive as investments.

On Friday, the release of employment data for July will be examined for hints about future energy demand in the world's No. 1 economy.

"We'll look to position ourselves for Friday's number and get a better gauge on how fast demand is growing and going," Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinions said in a commentary. "I think that demand is definitely more correlated to the number of people working, which in turn leads to a lot more drivers."

Traders are also looking to see whether the Energy Department will report another draw in oil supplies after a surprisingly large drop of 30 million barrels over the past month.

Oil supplies remain high compared with the five-year average, even after the monthlong reduction, so most traders say it is more likely that oil prices will soon fall than rise.

In other trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

-- Wholesale gasoline rose 0.2 cents to $2.9797 a gallon.

-- Heating oil fell 0.4 cent to $3.0125 a gallon.

-- Natural gas fell 3 cents to $3.4420 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Ruling coalition endorses new state in south India

NEW DELHI (AP) India's ruling coalition on Tuesday endorsed the creation of a new state in southern India, a government official said.

The United Progressive Alliance coalition unanimously agreed to endorse the formation of a new state called Telangana to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh state, civil aviation minister Ajit Singh told reporters.

Later, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Congress Party decided to approve the creation of the state.

The large size of some of India's 28 states makes them difficult to administer and has prompted movements to divide them. Telangana would become India's 29th state.

Telangana supporters say the drought-prone northern area is underdeveloped and ignored by powerful politicians from southern Andhra Pradesh. Residents of the 10 districts that form Telangana say they are discriminated against in the allocation of state funds, water and jobs.

The decision is likely to be opposed by the rest of Andhra Pradesh, primarily because the proposed Telangana area would include the state capital and industrial hub, Hyderabad.

The demand for a separate state of Telangana has erupted sporadically since the 1950s, with hunger strikes and violent protests claiming about 1,000 lives over the past decade. Several protesters self-immolated to press for the creation of the state.

The protests gained strength in 2009 when veteran politician K. Chandrasekhara Rao began a hunger strike. After 11 days, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government agreed to split the state.

The government then delayed a decision while sporadic protests, both for and against the new state, gripped Andhra Pradesh.

Critics of the decision to carve out the state said the move would spur other demands for creating states.

Several parts of India the Bundelkhand region in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha in western Maharashtra state and Gorkhaland in the eastern West Bengal state face similar statehood movements, but the government has not made any moves to create states there.

Witness: Spain train driver said he couldn't brake

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) ? The driver of a speeding Spanish train that derailed, killing 78 people, said minutes after the crash that he had been going fast and couldn't brake, a local resident who rushed to the scene of the accident said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

Evaristo Iglesias said that he and another person accompanied the blood-soaked Francisco Jose Garzon Amo to a stretch of flat ground where other injured people were being laid out, waiting for emergency services to arrive.

"He told us that he wanted to die," Iglesias told Antena 3 television.

"He said he had needed to brake but couldn't," Iglesias said. He added that Garzon said "he had been going fast."

The station showed a photograph of Iglesias in a pink shirt and cap helping carry the driver after the Wednesday accident in the northwestern Spanish town of Santiago De Compostela. It also aired television footage of Iglesias working beside the wrecked train to help other survivors.

Garzon has been released from the hospital and is in police custody on suspicion of negligent homicide.

The train carrying 218 passenger in eight cars hurtled far over the 80-kph (50-mph) speed limit into a high-risk curve, tumbling off the tracks and slamming into a concrete wall, with some of the cars catching fire.

The Spanish rail agency has said the brakes should have been applied four kilometers (2.5 miles) before the train hit the curve.

In the interview, Iglesias recalled Garzon's words, "'I don't want to see this, I want to die,' that's what he said repeatedly," said Iglesias. "'I had to brake down to 80 and couldn't,'" Iglesias said he said.

Spain's state-run train company has described Garzon as an experience driver who knew the route well. He is expected to give testimony to an investigating judge later Sunday, though he exercised his right to remain silent when police tried to interview him.

The judge will also have access to information contained in the train's "black box," which is similar to those found on aircraft.

Iglesias was among survivors and witnesses who began to give evidence to police on Sunday. Investigators must determine if Garzon failed to apply the brakes or whether it was a technical failure.

Meanwhile, authorities said forensic experts have identified the last three bodies among the 78 dead. They did not reveal the names, but said Sunday that all of the families had been notified.

Victims have been reported from France, Algeria, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Mexico and the United States.

Mourning continued throughout Spain, with Sunday church services being held in remembrance of the dead.

A large funeral mass is planned for Monday afternoon in Santiago de Compostela, and the prime minister and royal family are expected to attend.

The crash has cast a pall over the town, a Catholic pilgrimage site. Santiago officials had been preparing for the religious feast of St. James of Compostela, Spain's patron saint, but canceled it after the crash and turned a local sporting arena into a morgue.

Michigan Football: Previewing the 4 Biggest Position Battles Headed into Fall

This one may be a bit under the radar for some. One would think last year's full-time starter, Raymon Taylor, would have a starting job all but locked up. However, that doesn't seem to be the case.

There has been a constant buzz around Ann Arbor all offseason that Taylor could be unseated by Courtney Avery for multiple reasons.

One reason could date back to the spring game, in which Taylor was benched in favor of Delonte Hollowell; that could have just been a warning sign for Taylor, letting him know he can't relax.

Another reason could be to get freshman Dymonte Thomas into the lineup. The early enrollee is simply too good to keep off the field, and in a crowded secondary, it could be hard to get him playing time.

Allowing Avery to start at corner would enable Thomas to then start at nickelback, the position that Avery manned last year.

There is still a lot to be sorted out, so this is obviously one to keep an eye on.

As college football season approaches, power conferences seek change

Welcome to the season Urban Meyer, Mark Emmert and Johnny Manziel can't wait to get started.

All three of these men, in some form or fashion, had issues with their snooze alarms.

Oregon skips merrily into fall camp like a schoolchild after getting a probationary wrist slap only a few years after the NCAA sent USC to San Quentin for jaywalking.

USC Coach Lane Kiffin is reportedly not on the hot seat despite what happened last year on the surface of the Sun Bowl.

And get this: UCLA not only won its first NCAA baseball title with its brand of gutty-little-Bruins ball, but it also has been picked to finish ahead of USC in football for the first time since 2001.

Can't wait for the new improved show: "Whose Town Is It Anyway?"

Football was put on Earth because it is fantastically fun. But it has also loathsomely become a "Bonfire of the Vanities" of power, control, greed, money, access and more power.

This is the 16th (and last) year of the tired Bowl Championship Series, as the sport dramatically transitions, recalibrates and uncomfortably squirms.

While England rejoices over the birth of young Prince George, everyone here knows the Southeastern Conference is the king that lords over its subjects. The league has won seven straight national titles and will be favored to win its eighth.

Commissioner Mike Slive, an avuncular guy who calls himself a "recovering lawyer," opened his SEC state of the union news conference with his usual "brag bag" of accomplishments.

Bully (pulpit) for him.

The operative word moving forward, though, is "change."

Some of it has already been formally rubber-stamped.

A four-team playoff is coming in two years but not until the Rose Bowl hosts its 100th game on Jan. 1 and the last BCS title game is played Jan. 6.

Schools are switching leagues almost as fast as coaches are switching schools.

The change gurgling below, though, is about the consolidation of power.

Darwinism has already claimed Big East football and left five power leagues to distribute $5.6 billion over the next 12 years.

The big boppers are the SEC, Big Ten, Pac-12, Atlantic Coast Conference and Big 12, which have severely separated themselves from "the Group of Five": Mountain West, Mid-American Conference, Sun Belt, Conference USA and the new American Athletic Conference.

The Power Five controls about 75% of the new money and wants to use it to pay its scholarship student-athletes a "full cost of attendance" stipend ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 per year.

It's a noble gesture and also a convenient power grab to further segregate from the working class.

Ravens TE Pitta dislocates hip, out indefinitely

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ? Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta dislocated his hip in practice Saturday and will be sidelined indefinitely with what coach John Harbaugh called "a serious injury."

Pitta was carted off the field after colliding with safety James Ihedigbo in the back of the end zone vying for a pass from Joe Flacco. The receiver lay prone for several minutes before the cart arrived.

The Ravens begin defense of their Super Bowl title on Sept. 5 in Denver. Pitta will at least miss that game, Harbaugh said, but the severity of the injury could keep the tight end out for much longer than that.

The Ravens re-tweeted a story by ESPN in which a league source said Pitta would miss the entire season.

Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome did not immediately answer a text message from The Associated Press seeking information on Pitta's status.

After practice, a somber Harbaugh said, "Dennis has a dislocated hip. We'll have to take a look at that and see exactly what it is. It's a serious injury. He is going to be out for a while. He will not be in the Denver game and we'll just have to play it from there to see how long it goes."

Late Saturday night, a Ravens official said the club had no update from doctors or Pitta. He said the team website regularly re-tweets stories and updates from various news agencies.

Pitta was preparing for his fourth season with Baltimore. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder caught 61 passes for 669 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

In the playoffs, Pitta had 14 catches for 163 yards and three scores.

With Pitta gone, the Ravens are without their two of their most productive receivers last year. Pitta's 61 catches were tied for second with Ray Rice behind Anquan Boldin, who was traded to San Francisco during the offseason.

"Obviously, he was a very, very productive guy for us," Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell said of Pitta. "He made a lot of big plays last year. We'll see what happens. But somebody is going to have to step up. We do have some capable guys all across the flanks. We do have some weapons. We're just going to have to have some guys make some plays for us."

In his first three NFL seasons, Pitta has 102 receptions for 1,075 yards and 10 touchdowns over 43 regular-season games.

Three dead as bus load of children heading home from church camp overturns on Indianapolis highway

  • Most of the 37 passengers were teenagers and several critical injuries have been reported
  • Among the dead are a husband and wife
  • 12 ambulances were needed to transport the injured church members from the scene
  • A teenager is believed dead

Three people were killed when a bus carrying mostly teens from a church camp overturned on a busy Indianapolis highway after the bus attempted a turn 'at high speeds' Saturday afternoon.

Twenty-six injuries, several of them critical, are reported and most of the victims are believed to be teenagers, five of whom remained pinned inside the bus as rescuers raced to the scene.

Among the dead are a husband and wife. Twelve ambulances were required to transport the injured from among the bus's 37 passengers, all of them members of Indianapolis's Colonial Hills Baptist Church who'd nearly made it home when tragedy struck.

This, according the to the Indianapolis Star, which reports that the third fatality is a teenager.

Indianapolis Fire Department spokesman Lt. Rita Burris confirms the deaths and says survivors were taken to area hospitals.

Medical helicopters also arrived at the scene to transport the most seriously injured.

The church's youth pastor had sent a tweet a couple of hours before the crash saying the group was expected to arrive at the church about 4:15 p.m., around the time the accident happened.

'They were not that far from home. That only adds to the tragedy,' said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs.

Nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. Three of those were treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Sally Winter said. She said 10 others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Seven of those teenagers were treated and released, Winter said.

Many of the patients were suffering head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Witnesses described the scene as mass chaos as drivers immediately swarmed the accident, where victims littered the highway.

Witness Carol Albright seemed surprised there wasn't even further carnage.

'It kind of pivoted on the nose of the bus and did a little bit of a twist,' Albright told the Star. 'How it didn't hit another car, I don't know.'

Another witness tried to treat what victims she could.

?Everybody had boils and scrapes on them,? Sasha Sample, who works as a nurse, told the Star. ?People were trying to climb from under the bus.?

Sample said she came upon the driver first.

?I couldn't do anything for him,? Sample said. ?So you triage. You help those you can.?

The Indianapolis Fire Department official Twitter account tweeted about the incident around 6pm Saturday, asking that people 'please pray for all involved.'

Duane Lloyd told the WTHR that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash.

'I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus,' Lloyd said. 'I could have gone my whole life without seeing that.'

An employee of Camp CoBeAc confirmed to MailOnline that the group was nearly home from a youth group trip to the Houghton Lake, Michigan camp when the crash occurred.

An Indiana Department of Transportation camera showed the bus overturned on its side near an Interstate 465 overpass.

Family members and loved one of the victims were directed to gather at a nearby church.

The crash caused a large and hazardous diesel fuel spill, which a hazardous materials team arrived to clean up as traffic ground.

Roads near the scene were closed, and authorities were urging people to use caution in the area.

Parents of passengers were asked to go to the church for information.

Driver in Spanish train crash faces questions from judge

Francisco Garzon is now under arrest, as the investigation centers on his role in the crash that killed or injured almost everyone on board. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

By Tracy Rucinski, Reuters

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain - The driver of a Spanish train that derailed at high speed was due to be questioned by a judge Sunday as officials try to determine to what degree he was responsible for the deaths of 78 people in the accident.

Francisco Garzon, 52, has been held by police on suspicion of reckless homicide, but has yet to be formally charged by a magistrate or to make any official statement.

The experienced driver was travelling at more than twice the 80 km per hour permitted on a curve going into the city of Santiago when the train careered off the track and smashed into a wall.

On Sunday all of the dead in the accident had been identified and 71 people were still hospitalized with injuries from the crash, which crumpled the train and set some of carriages on fire. Of those, 31 were in critical condition.

After the accident, his face covered in blood from a head wound, Garzon spoke with both the train system control centre and emergency dispatchers. Spanish newspapers have reported that transcripts of those communications show that he recognized he was going too fast.

Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez said on Saturday there was sufficient evidence to charge Garzon with reckless homicide.

He was released from hospital on Saturday but remained in police custody. Neither lawyers nor members of Garzon's family could be contacted for comment.

The Alvia train, one of three types of high speed train services that run in Spain, received a full maintenance check on the morning of the journey, the head of state train company RENFE said, and security systems in place were in good shape.

The Alvia trains run both on traditional tracks, where drivers must heed warning systems to reduce speed, and on high-speed tracks where a more sophisticated security system will automatically slow down trains that are going too fast.

At the section of the track where the accident happened, it was up to the driver to respond to prompts to slow down.

On Sunday, pilgrims and passers-by continued to pay homage to the victims, placing flowers and candles at the gates of Santiago's centuries-old cathedral as the city prepared for an official funeral on Monday, to be attended by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Santiago was meant to be celebrating the yearly festival of St. James on July 25, with thousands of Christian pilgrims arriving after walking the famous Camino de Santiago ancient pilgrimage trail. Festivities were cancelled after the accident on the eve of the Saint's day.

Some pilgrims left walking sticks from their journeys and others placed shells, the symbol of St. James and badge of honor for the pilgrims who complete the journey, along the gates.

Dolores Mato, 57, a shopkeeper close to the ancient cathedral in Santiago, expressed sympathy and grief for the victims and their families, but also for Garzon, who she said had been "crucified" in the media.

"I really think something must have gone wrong on that train. It couldn't have been only his fault," she said.

Train drivers union SEMAF say the treatment of Garzon at this early stage in the investigation has been inappropriate.

"(The police) are using information which hasn't been checked, without having the official version, to arrest this man. You can't take someone away in handcuffs like that, it leaves a great deal to be desired," said Santiago Pino, spokesman for train drivers union SEMAF.?

The 'two founding races', the 'four founding churches', and our place in Canada

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: forums.canadiancontent.net --- Friday, July 26, 2013
With the new revelations about more experiments at the residential schools recently, with continued underfunding of indigenous schools in Canada still today, essentially a continued attempt at the cultural genocide of indigenous peoples, I was wondering, what is our place in Canada? I myself am a member of the so-called two founding races (French Canadian on my mother's side, English Canadian on my father's), and was raised in one of the 'four founding churches' (Catholic, the other three for those who aren't as familiar with the residential school system being the Anglican, Presbyterian, and United Churches). Yet with all of this, I can't remember ever learning about the residential school system in school. I can't remember it ever even being mentioned the whole time I was raised Catholic. Why is that? Though I no longer profess the Christian Faith (actually, I never really did), I still respect the teachings of the Gospels. But where are these teachings practiced besides on an individual basis among individuals? Where is it being practiced in our institutions? Many indigenous peoples today are suffering from PTSD or intergenerational PTSD as a result of the residential school system, as witness alcohol and drug dependency, violence on reserves, high suicide rates, and the list goes on. Their population was purposely decimated and then much more than that over the centuries, and they continue to be marginalized. We have inherite ...

Toshiba to cut costs in TVs, PCs by $300 million over next 2 years

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Toshiba Corp said on Friday it aims to cut a combined 10 billion yen ($100 million) in costs in its television and PC businesses in the year to March 2014 and double that figure in the following year to cope with persistently weak demand.

Toshiba said it will shift 400 staff from its domestic TV and PC businesses to its social infrastructure arm and other segments this fiscal year, after breaking up its Digital Products company into three divisions.

The company's TV segment has been in the red for the past two years due to weak global sales, partly reflecting a slowdown in Europe, and a drop in domestic demand following a short-lived boost from a switch to digital broadcasting. The PC market has also been hit by the rise of smartphones and tablets.

Toshiba said it would aim to increase TV sales in emerging economies to 40 percent of total revenue, from 30 percent in fiscal 2012, while expanding its line of high-end LCD TVs and focusing on its B2B business.

The company's share price closed down 3.7 percent on Friday at 463 yen, in line with a 3 percent drop in Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei share index.

Samsung Galaxy Note III may come in three screen sizes: 5.5, 5.7 and 6 inches

Samsung Galaxy Note III could come in three screen sizes 55, 57 or 6 inches

It's no secret that Samsung's working on a next-gen Galaxy Note, but little did we know that it might come in three screen sizes. We've previously seen the model number SM-N900 pop up in a number of places, and this time, our friend @techkiddy spotted the screen sizes alongside some new names on Zauba, a database that somehow tracks India's import and export shipments.

Unlike the rumors out there that only mention a single screen size, Zauba lists all 5.5-, 5.7- and 6-inch versions of this supposed Note III, and that these are all shipped to India "for R&D purpose." If true, this would match the multi-size strategy of the Galaxy Mega. Additionally, there are a handful of variant names here: SM-N900A, SM-N900AI, SM-N900P, SM-N900R4, SM-N900S, SM-N900T and SM-N900V. We're not quite sure what the differences are, but some of these are tagged with multiple screen sizes, so they're probably just packaged with different radios. Regardless, we have a feeling that JK Shin will tell us everything at IFA in September.

Update: Adam from Samsung Updates has explained what these model numbers mean. Go take a look.

Kane County Chronicle | Boomers often must care for parents, children

Bob Brown and his wife told their children they could live with them for a year after graduating from college ? but they really wanted them moved out in six months and would charge them rent.

"They moved pretty fast," the St. Charles resident said of his children, now 33, 31 and 29.

But for six months out of the year, Brown and his wife open their home to his 97-year-old father-in-law, who is mobile and has all of his faculties. He spends the winters in Austin, Texas, with his other married daughter.

"He doesn't wear out his welcome," Brown said.

At 66, Brown is part of the baby boomer generation, those born between 1946 and 1964. As baby boomers cross the threshold into retirement age ? 10,000 boomers a day turn 65 in the United States ? many are paying more attention to family and the need to care for aging parents while helping adult children in a down economy.

"The baby boomer generation often fills in the family," said Lucia Jones, executive director for the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, which helps coordinate federal funds and general resources to senior service agencies in metropolitan Chicago, including organizations in Kane, DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.

"They are often saddled with responsibilities to their parents, as well as their younger children," she added.

The agency coordinates with local groups such as ElderDay Center and Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice in Kane County. Kane County has seen an increase in demand for services by those in their early 60s, according to the 2011-2012 Kane County Community Health Assessment.

"The fastest-growing age group in Kane is the age group 55 to 69 years, which increased by more than 70 percent," according to the assessment. "In fact, the 60 to 64 year age group doubled in the last 10 years."

Many of these baby boomers have found themselves serving as caregivers for their parents, who are living longer than previous generations and increasingly are preferring to age at home, Jones said.

That's the situation for Campton Hills residents Sandy and Pat Ryan ? he was born during the baby boom ? who have welcomed Sandy's 83-year-old mother to share their home with them and their two teenage daughters, Sara and Emily.

Sandy Ryan said her mother probably takes care of her family more than they take care of her, but she noted she handles some of her mother's medical needs, like talking with doctors.

Having her at the house can be stressful at times on both sides, she said.

"She's more concerned about certain things the girls are doing than I would be," Sandy Ryan said. "I think she has a hard time realizing they're at the age that they are."

Parenting children, caring for parents

The Browns and Ryans are hardly alone in caring for a parent: Nearly 10 million adult children older than 50 provide care for their aging parents, a 2011 study from MetLife on the caregiving costs for working baby boomers found.

The total lifetime financial impact ? in terms of lost wages, Social Security benefits and private pensions ? for the average baby boomer to care for their parents is $303,880, the study found. That amount includes leaving the labor force early and/or reduced hours of work.

The caregiver role ranges from helping with the bills to helping with medical treatment. About one-third of caregivers, the study showed, work fewer hours or leave the workforce early to focus on caring for their elderly parents.

"The trend is that people want to live in their homes and not in an institutionalized program," said Betsy Creamer, supervisor for the Illinois Department on Aging's Office of Older American Services. "Baby boomers are providing more and more care to their families as caregivers."

Creamer's office helps administer the department's community care program, which provides in-home services for seniors. Illinois has seen a "fairly dramatic" increase in demand for the program, which now serves 46,750 more residents than in 2003, Creamer said.

But baby boomers also are turning to assisted living places for help. The Autumn Leaves Alzheimer's and Memory Care Assisted Living community in St. Charles receives many inquiries from adult children about services for their parents, Executive Director Brian Nebel said.

Autumn Leaves staff acknowledged that adult children often struggle with feelings of guilt because they promised their parents they wouldn't put them in a home. After doing so, however, many wish they had done so sooner, staff members said.

In addition to their parents, baby boomers often feel obligated to help their children, many struggling to find jobs in a slow economy that includes persistently high unemployment.

A 2012 survey from the National Endowment for Financial Education found that 59 percent of parents are providing financial support ? such as living expenses and transportation costs ? to adult children who no longer are in school.

The findings were released at the same time the MetLife Mature Market Institute surveyed 2,123 Americans ages 21 to 65 on the level of financial responsibility people of different generations feel in a variety of family roles.

In it, 77 percent of baby boomers interviewed said they wish they could do more for their children.

About 44 percent of baby boomers felt an absolute or strong responsibility to provide for their child's higher education, and a near identical amount ? 45 percent ? felt the same way toward allowing a child to live at home during times of financial difficulty.

Geneva resident Margaret Evans, 57, works four jobs ? three part-time and one full-time ? because, in addition to having many bills, she is supporting her 22-year-old son.

Her son recently finished the automotive program at Waubonsee Community College, and hopes to sign up for a program at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Evans said, noting that expense.

"He's got to find a job," she said.

Brown ? the St. Charles baby boomer who encouraged his three children to live on their own after graduating from college ? said they returned home for a short period before finding other living arrangements.

"It's good for everybody," he said.

There are 36 hours, 50 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

Dog finds escaped python at Dartmouth College

A 3-foot ball python that went missing at Dartmouth College several days ago has been found thanks to a small dog.

Daisy is a 4-year-old Jack Russell-Dachshund mix. She and her owner, Vicky Moors, live at the Tabard House at Dartmouth where the python went missing last week. Tuesday night, Daisy got on the trail of the snake and alerted fraternity members. The python was located outside, next to the house, in a small hole.

"She just really wanted to attack it," Moors said. "And it is pretty cute because at first I was kind of scared that the snake would hurt her possibly, I didn't really remember how big it was or able to picture a 3-foot python because she is kind of a rodent size."

The python is now back in its cage where it belongs. It is not a poisonous snake and experts say its escape did not pose a threat to the public.

Adam Sullivan will have more on this story tonight on the Channel 3 News at 6 p.m.

Solar Field In Cumberland County Turns Heat Wave Sunshine Into Energy

By Cleve Bryan

MILLVILLE, NJ (CBS) ? Even a heat wave has a silver lining when you?re talking about the solar power being generated at Millville?s new 7.4 acre solar field.

The solar project connected to the city?s sewage treatment plant was free through a power-purchase agreement, and it saves Millville big bucks.

?It?s our first solar project, and it?s a great project for us. We?re going to save around $150,000 a year,? says the city commissioner and public works director Dale Finch.

The solar field went online in January and was celebrated last week with a ribbon-cutting. The solar field produces close to 1.5 megawatts of electricity which, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, is enough to power about 210 homes in New Jersey.

?On a clear day with no clouds like today, we?re producing more than the plant is consuming, and we?re getting credit for what we?re putting back in the grid,? says Public Works Superintendent Richard Jones.

Millville?s contribution to New Jersey?s clean energy portfolio helped the Garden State become just the third to reach the one gigawatt solar power mark.

According to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, there are more than 15,500 residential, 3,000 commercial, 300 school, and 200 government solar projects in the state.

Court disallows salespeople's bid for class-action status ? Business ...

A federal judge in the Western Dis??trict of New York has decertified a class of outside salespeople who alleged they were misclassified, citing two recent Supreme Court decisions.

In April this year, the Supreme Court ruled in Comcast v. Behrend that plaintiffs must show that class-wide remedies are available in order for a class-action lawsuit to move forward.

In the 2011 landmark case Dukes v. Wal-Mart, the court said class-action settlements must offer common an??swers to common questions. If class members face many different issues, then they must be litigated individually, not via a class action.

In Tracy v. NVR, Inc., the Western District court found that the outside salespeople who made up the class raised very different issues and performed their work in diverse environments.

The court concluded, ?the interests of judicial economy would not be served by the hundreds of fact-?intensive ?mini-trials? that a class action of this nature would require.?

Note: Have your attorney review outside salespersons? activities to ensure they are properly classified under the FLSA.

Royal baby name has 'Seinfeld' connections

Pop culture

IMAGE: Seinfeld

AP file

The royal baby's new name doesn't have a "Seinfeld" connection of course. Or does it?

So there's this royal baby, yada yada yada, and the whole world is celebrating like it's Festivus or something. We don't want to be the biggest jerk at the jerk store, but sometimes people get sick of being told, "Ya gotta see the BABY!" And they didn't even name it Seven, the name Susan's cousin stole from George. Guess those Brits just don't appreciate Mickey Mantle's jersey number.

But wait a minute. Are we seeing a certain "Seinfeldian" trend in the names Prince William and Duchess Kate just announced for the future king?

Take the name George Alexander Louis apart. First there's "George," which yes, we know, Queen Elizabeth's beloved father, but also, a certain Costanza we all know and love.

Then there's "Alexander," which just so happens to be the last name of the actor who played George, Jason Alexander.

And then there's "Louis," after Louis Mountbatten, but also a name that appears in the "Seinfeld" credits. If you don't know that Julia Louis-Dreyfus played Elaine Benes, all we have to say to you is GET OUT! (Add characteristic Elaine double-hand push in there if you like.) And, as the official "Seinfeld" Twitter account pointed out, "Louis" is also George Costanza's middle name.

Three names, three (or four) "Seinfeld" connections. Now that name's sounding a little better to us Yanks. We might even have to send the little royal guy a chocolate babka or a beltless trenchcoat. And now Will and Kate have a few years to start working out a cover story on why an eventual little brother will be dubbed Cosmo Kramer.

Central Africa: Facing the Challenges of Forced Migration in Host Communities

As refugees pour over the border into the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), they don't know what awaits them. Forced to flee the violence between the government and Seleka rebel forces in their homeland of Central African Republic (CAR), women, children and the elderly are now in search of a safe place to sleep, even if that means finding refuge under a few tree branches on the banks of a riverbed.

For thousands of CAR refugees, this is exactly the situation they now find themselves in. Settling on the sandbanks of the Ubangi River in north-western DRC, they are living in makeshift shelters with little access to clean water or sanitation facilities.

"These refugees are living in a very difficult and precarious situation, they are exposed to all forms of adversity, especially those living on the sandbanks who live in huts," says Denis Duffaut, the regional representative for central Africa at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

"Host households are also overcrowded and lack all essential items. This situation has resulted in major challenges for the refugees in all key aspects of health and nutrition, water, hygiene, sanitation and shelter."

The region is a common destination for refugees as the Ubangi River provides opportunities for fishing, which allows people in camps to supplement the support they receive from UNHCR. However, people are also using the river to bathe and wash, and as a latrine, as well as for drinking water, which poses serious health risks.

Humanitarian organizations have launched programmes to promote hygiene and sanitation in affected areas. To date, 18 chlorination stations have been installed along the river in Lembo, Kambo and Mobayi-Mbongo to help provide clean water from the river. These sustainable projects are managed by the refugees themselves who are trained in the safe use of chlorine and aquatabs.

Awareness campaigns on the importance of latrines have also been launched, but their availability varies. In areas where temporary shelters have been erected, latrines are available - including six built by volunteers with the Red Cross of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. But on the riverbanks, they are harder to find.

The IFRC has launched an emergency appeal of 1,122,910 Swiss francs (1.2 million US dollars) to support 15,000 refugees over six months. Ensuring people remain healthy is a key component of the Red Cross work.

Despite the challenges of accessing this extremely remote area, volunteers with the local Red Cross have already helped construct 47 latrines and 30 showers, and distributed aquatabs to help purify water.

"We have succeeded in providing some level of comfort to refugees, who also took ownership of the sanitary facilities, using them before they were even inaugurated," says Duffaut. "But there is still a lot of work to do. And for that, we need support from our partners, if we truly aim to help these refugee families remain healthy in the months ahead."
