PAC to host its first standup comedy show on Friday | Sun Patriot

From political rallies to jazz concerts, film festivals to local theater, the Watertown-Mayer Performing Arts Center has hosted a wide variety of events in its brief 5-year history.

But this weekend, the venue will host its first ever standup comedy performance when? Jason Schommer and Mary Rowles perform co-headlining sets at the 600-seat theater Friday at 7:30 p.m. The show is being called the ?Hunting Widows? Weekend Comedy Show,? and is the first show as part of a new agreement between Watertown-Mayer schools and a St. Cloud entertainment booking agency designed to bring more entertainment to the PAC.

Despite the inclusion of the term ?Hunting Widows? in the show?s title, a reference to the women left behind as men head off for opening weekend of deer season, both comedians said the show?s material is not geared toward the theme, which is simply a reference to the timing of the show. While the show is designed to provide a perfect opportunity for a girls? night out during hunting season, it really is for all audiences.

?Everybody?s welcome ? even the hunters,? Schommer said.
Schommer, a Little Falls, Minn., is a relative newcomer to the comedy scene, but has found quick success since beginning to pursue comedy more rigorously just 3 years ago. Schommer originally stumbled into comedy while working as a production assistant for ?The Rosie O?Donnel Show? in New York. The show?s writers, who thought he was funny, signed him up to perform at the New York Comedy club. Schommer?s performance was a success, and he has since landed a gig opening for one comedy?s biggest legends.

Schommer, who has relocated to Las Vegas, serves as the nightly opening act for Louie Anderson, another Minnesota comedian perhaps equally famous for his former role as host of The Family Feud, as well as his stand up comedy.

?Every time I go on stage before him, it?s a weird thing,? Schommer said. ?It?s like, how did this happen? I remember being in high school, I used to ride my bike down to the video store to rent his comedy special. Now, I work with him every day. It?s a weird, surreal thing.?

Schommer first met Anderson at a comedy boot camp, an intensive weekend seminar designed to teach comedians the business. Later, when Anderson was back in Minnesota, he asked Schommer if he would open for him, and the relationship continued to build from there. Schommer has opened for Anderson in Las Vegas for the last 15 months.

Both Anderson and Schommer are ?bigger guys? (Schommer?s words), are both Minnesota natives and base much of their comedy on their Midwestern upbringing. Schommer said his pairing with Anderson is somewhat of a natural fit. Schommer?s comedy style ranges from observational humor based on his life and family, to recounting encounters with celebrities and commentary of pop culture.

?(Anderson) often jokes that I?m a younger version of him,? Schommer said. ?We?re not identical by any means, but we?re very complimentary.?

While Schommer opens nightly for Anderson, he does return to Minnesota often for shows in his home state. Schommer said it?s a lot of travel back and forth, but Anderson?s flexibility with his schedule has made it easier.

?When you?re a comedian, and your boss is a comedian, they get it completely,? Schommer said of his busy schedule.

Rowles also got into standup comedy by chance. The 20-year veteran of the industry said she never would have predicted she would have turned out to be a comedian, because she grew up wanting to become a jazz singer.

But, Rowles got her start doing improv in Minneapolis, and has been entertaining audiences across the region and even the country ever since. Lately, she says her work has included mostly corporate events, colleges and private parties. No matter what type of audience, Rowles said it?s easy to identify what she enjoys about being a comedian.

?I love having a positive effect,? Rowles said. ?I just love when people come up to me and say they were having the worst day ever, and they totally forgot their problems. It?s making people laugh, and making them laugh hard, that I enjoy.?

Rowles? comedic style includes a little of everything. She does characters, original songs, song parodies, audience participation, and straight-up standup. She said she is most known, however, for her characters.

?I do characters that everybody has met at some point in their life, and I risk to say they probably have at least one relative of the same nature,? Rowles said.

The comedy show at the Performing Arts Center is part of a new agreement that was reached between the local school district and G.L. Berg Entertainment, a talent booking agency based in St. Cloud. As part of the agreement, the school district simply provides the venue, while G.L. Berg assumes all financial risk and retains any profits. The two parties are hoping to partner for a series of shows in the coming months.

This show, the first of the new partnership, is designed to be a family-friendly event, or at least as much as a comedy show can be. Rowles said the show is probably geared more toward 14-and-up, and said a clean show with now swearing or vulgarity is always something that?s important to her.

?I just think it shows a certain level of intelligence,? she said. ?It?s pretty easy for anybody to go blue and get a laugh. You?ll get the laugh, but as far as sustaining an audience and getting them to come back, it takes more.?

Schommer also said he puts on a clean show, because he believes that is what audiences truly want to see.

?I just think there are a lot of negative things in the world as it is,? Schommer said. ?I don?t need to add to it. For me to get up on stage and rant and rave and yell and swear for an hour, what good does that do anybody? It would just make me look like a crazy person.?

Friday?s show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Tickets are available via www.glbergpresents.com or at Watertown Pharmacy, Marketplace Foods and the Watertown-Mayer Community Education Office.

GRE Tests Give More Options to Students

(NewsUSA) ? Accepted by more institutions than any other graduate admissions test, the GRE revised General Test now provides more options and opportunities for test takers. Here are five reasons why there?s never been a better time to take the GRE revised General Test.
1.

It is the one test that applicants can take to apply to more than 3,000 graduate and business schools worldwide. GRE scores are used for admission to master?s, MBA, Ph.D. and fellowship programs.
2.

Considering business school? Nearly 900 business schools worldwide now accept GRE scores for admission into their MBA and other graduate business programs. MBA applicants around the world are now taking the GRE revised General Test with its test-taker friendly design, new ScoreSelect option, free services, and more advanced degree opportunities. Plus, the GRE revised General Test is less expensive than other graduate admissions tests used by business schools.

?Accepting GRE scores is a win-win for both students and the graduate program,?said Harvie Wilkinson, Director of MBA Programs for the Gatton College of Business at the University of Kentucky. ?The student now has more options, and with that, the business school becomes more diverse; with different backgrounds working together, better projects are able to be produced.?
3.

The ScoreSelect option, available July 2012, helps individuals approach test day with more confidence, knowing they can send the scores they feel reflect their personal best. Now GRE test takers can decide which test scores to send to the institutions they designate.
4.

The GRE revised General Test features a flexible, friendly design for a better test experience. Features include ?mark and review? to tag questions so students can skip and return later and the ability to change answers, all within a section. An on-screen calculator is provided for the Quantitative Reasoning measure.
5.

Test takers can prepare for the GRE revised General Test using free and low-cost tools available at www.ets.org/gre/prepare. These include: POWERPREP II software featuring full-length practice tests, GRE Math Review, The Official Guide to the GRE revised General Test, ScoreItNow! Online Writing Practice, and more.

The test-taker friendly design, new ScoreSelect option and more advanced degree opportunities mean it just got easier for students to start their future now with the GRE revised General Test. To register, visit www.ets.org/gre/registernow.

TIP! Leadership is essential in your personal development. When thinking about leadership, think about it in terms of your level of influence on the world around you.

Realize that you have physical limits when it comes to accomplishing something. You need to give it your best shot, but you also need to know when your best shot is good enough. It?s still important to care for your body while focusing on goal achievement in other areas. Your self improvement will suffer greatly if you sacrifice your health.

TIP! Keep in mind the well-known saying that you can?t please everybody all of the time. Your main concern should be yourself.

When dealing with depression, a diet that includes more complex carbohydrates is better. If you are not consuming adequate amounts of complex carbohydrates, your serotonin levels may be lower than they should be. Incorporate more raw produce, nuts, brown rice, beans and whole grains into every meal.

TIP! Stress is one of the biggest enemies of happiness. When our minds undergo stress, this actually damages our whole body, physically and mentally.

Live your life according to your values. Your personal beliefs create the foundation for who you are. Sticking to your core values will help your self esteem, if you?ve got a strong foundation to rely on. Doing this will help you develop consistency, which is a good trait to have.

TIP! Read good articles about personal development. Well written books on personal development will always spark new ideas and give suggestions on altering your life.

True leaders are humble as they exercise their power. A key factor of leadership is the ability to serve oneself to others, and to be firm while also being gentle. Being virtuous and having integrity is part of being a leader, too, and few people will follow a leader that does not display these traits.

TIP! Make some attainable short-term and long-term personal development goals. Long at the difference between the place you are in right now and where you will be after achieving these.

Excessive alcohol use can lead to liver, kidney and circulatory disorders. Do you smoke or do other activities that may be harmful to your health? Your body is sacred, and you have to learn to respect it. Kicking your worst habits is a large part of becoming a happier and more healthy individual. Look at how you are living your life, and check if you are participating in any negative habits that should be eliminated.

TIP! One important aspect of personal development is making the choice to lead a healthier life. When you feel good physically, you feel better mentally and emotionally too.

Q. Where's the old Find/Replace dialog box in Word 2010?

A. It took me awhile to get used to looking on the left for my search results and to use those buttons with the located search text to find my place in the document. While I did eventually get used to it, I needed that old dialog box for some things. It?s now called Advanced Find, and it?s located under the Find button, Editing group on the home tab. I added it to my Quick Access Toolbar to make it easier to find and use again.

10 Farm-To-Table Restaurants In Vancouver, Canada | Gadling.com

, it was apparent many restaurants are trying to create sustainable, farm-to-table menus. It's a great city if you're an eco-conscious traveler due to the many options for any price level. To help guide you, here are some top picks for morally conscious cuisine in Vancouver.

I'm not sure there are any other restaurants in the city that take creative sustainability to the level Diva at the Met does. Chef Hamid Salimian and his team enjoy foraging when they can, even for the organic matters like stones, driftwood and torched bark that make up the snack plates. Chef Salimian visualizes what most can not even fathom, while remaining as organic as possible. For example, a slice of chicken bacon from a biodiverse farm might be brined and smoked for days and come on a stone slab, while a squid ink-infused mussel bread will be topped with roe and made to look like coral. Seafood comes from Ocean Wise-certified providers, while produce comes from farms with high crop biodiversity. In terms of farms, most of their produce comes from North Arm Farm, Sapo Bravo, Glourish Organics and Cherry Lane Farm. Although an upscale restaurant, meals can be affordable, with prices ranging from $19 to $38 for an entree, to the five-course tasting menu at $55 and the seven-course tasting menu at $75.

Cibo Trattoria
900 Seymour Street

Like Diva at the Met, Cibo Trattoria immerses you in a relaxed, romantic ambiance. However, while Diva focuses on surreal gastronomy, Cibo Trattoria serves up rustic Italian fare with a modern twist. What's really interesting at this venue is they change their menu daily, focusing on what's fresh and in-season. While certain meats and cheeses come from Italy to get authenticity, much of their ingredients are locally sourced from British Columbia farms, with deliveries coming daily. For example, their radishes come from Aldergrove while their watercress is purchased from Hannah Brooks Farm in Langley. Typical dishes may include a handmade paccheri pasta with meatballs, oregano, San Marzano tomatoes and ricotta salada, crispy ox tongue with marinated heirloom peppers or roast bone marrow garlic and parsley bread crumbs and apple salad. They also do seasonally inspired dishes for fresh ingredients, like pumpkin ravioli with chili, garlic, marjoram and amaretti. You can sample local wines from the Okanagan and Fraser valleys. And although they have to reprint their menus daily, all printouts are done on recycled paper, which is also recycled after use. The menu includes affordable small plates as well as pastas for about $15 and entrees for less than $30.

c restaurant C Restaurant
1600 Howe Street

As the founding restaurant in the Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise Program, C Restaurant was one of the first in Vancouver to deconstruct seafood supply lines, dealing directly with the fisherman to ensure a product that is of the highest quality and ethical sensitivity. Since the restaurant focuses on seasonal freshness, there really isn't a signature dish. Instead, its signature is to utilize sustainable seafood and local produce as much as possible. Not only is their food sustainable, but their wine program features vintages from British Columbia's Okanagan Region, as well as global wines made with an organic and biodynamic philosophy. The restaurant is contemporary, with entrees averaging $30.

Juno Vancouver Sushi Bistro
572 Davie Street

You don't need to eat at an upscale restaurant to enjoy a sustainable meal. And with Vancouver having myriad sushi establishments, it would be wrong not to include one on this list. Located in Yaletown, Juno Vancouver Sushi Bistro doesn't simply churn out rolls, they focus on high-quality cuisine and fresh ingredients, employing only serious Japanese chefs. Ingredients include wild seafood, natural beef, free-range chicken and heritage KUROBUTA pork, all locally-sourced from British Columbia farms. If you're in the mood for a local drink, Juno serves sakes from the Granville Island Artisan Sake Maker and BC "Vintners Quality Alliance" (VQA) wines.

raincity grill Raincity Grill
1193 Denman Street

This high-end restaurant opened in 1992 with a menu that featured locally-sourced food. Eventually, Raincity Grill also added their signature 100-mile menu, which showcased items with ingredients from within 100-miles of Vancouver.

"Our menu is a tribute to the local farmers, fisherman and producers of British Columbia," it states on their homepage. "The Chef sources out the best organic, sustainable products available ... 'Farm-to-table' has become a recent catchphrase but at Raincity Grill it has been a philosophy for twenty years."

Some specific sustainable menu items include "Brioche French Toast" with Fraser Valley compote and house-made huckleberry syrup, a "Spinach And Berry" salad with North Arm Farm spinach, local berries and Okanagan goat's cheese and "Fraser Valley Duck Breast" with wild coastal huckleberries. If you're on a budget, check out their $10 fish and chips window. Libations are also in line with their 'go local' philosophy, as the restaurant serves wines from the Pacific West Coast.

Edible Canada Bistro
1596 Johnston Street

Located on Granville Island, Edible Canada's bistro does an excellent job of supporting the farm-to-feast philosophy. While their food is fresh and locally grown, even using onsite plant boxes of herbs and produce and making use of the adjacent public market, their efforts extend beyond eating. In fact, the venue features tabletops made of recycled fir tree, hostess stands created with discarded beach cedar and two complimentary charging stations for electric vehicles. As for drinks, they're spearheading the revolution of offering wine on tap, an environmentally-friendly way to serve vino as it eliminates the packaging and, because 27% of glass is recovered for recycling, stops millions of bottles from going to the landfill. Menu items range from $11 to $28, while their bacon window also offers inexpensive eats.

the templeton The Templeton
1087 Granville Street

Located in Vancouver's lively entertainment district, The Templeton is an old-fashioned retro diner serving comfort food in a sustainable way. Most ingredients are organic and locally sourced, and there are an array of vegetarian and vegan options, like lentil loaf, tofu omelets, Portobello mushroom burgers and veggie bacon. If you're a carnivore, The Templeton features organic, free-range and non-medicated meats. Best of all, this venue is cheap to moderately priced with $10 burgers, $10 fish and chips and $16 steaks. Finish it off with a $5 deep-fried Mars bar.

Trafalgar's Bistro
2603 West 16th Avenue

Trafalgars Bistro and adjacent Sweet Obsession bakery in Kitsilano are pioneers when it comes to sustainability. In the summer of 2011, the venues launched a recycling and composting initiative that was the first of its kind by installing a Green Good composting system. By doing this, they were able to eliminate all organic waste going to landfill, with 99% of the remaining trash being recycled. Additionally, their strong association with Inner City Farms means they can make use of their compost in Vancouver's urban gardens. In terms of food, their seafood is certified Ocean Wise, all meats are unmedicated and free-range and produce is almost always locally sourced. While the ambiance suggests fine dining, it's actually a casual and affordable place to eat, with entrees ranging from $17 to $30 and a three-course menu for $30.

blue water cafe + raw bar Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar
1095 Hamilton Street

Located in Yaletown, the casual yet elegant Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar has always focused on farm-to-table and ocean-to-table. All seafood is delivered to their kitchen daily and only the absolute freshest, exceptional quality fish and shellfish are selected. Most of them are line caught, trap caught or sustainably farmed in British Columbia. During the month of February, they even feature an annual Unsung Heroes Festival, which introduces diners to new experiences and flavors using abundant fish species, showcasing to people options other than over-fished varieties. It's no surprise the establishment is Ocean Wise, with swimming scallops from the Gulf Islands, Kusshi oysters and Reed oysters from B.C. and sustainably-farmed sturgeon from Sechelt. A typical entree is about $34.

La Pentola
322 Davie Street

Recently opened in September 2012, La Pentola serves up gourmet Italian dishes while also incorporating the Italian philosophy to source locally. In Italy, the regions are diverse because specific ingredients are important to different areas. Additionally, there are a vast amount of quality, artisanal products and farms around Vancouver, which La Pentola makes use of by working with them to create their dishes. For example, the restaurant uses squab from local livestock farms. Their dish has a sauce made from grapes, and a walla walla onion puree where both ingredients come from local Stoney Paradise Farm. To La Pentola, being cutting edge also means holding yourself accountable to the environment and the community. Expect to pay about $6 to $17 for a starter, $12/$13 for a pasta and $30 for an entree.

Rumored: Google to Announce Android 4.2 & Nexus 10 Next Week

Posted on October 22, 2012 10:30 AM by Rob Williams

Much of the Android world may not even be upgraded to Jelly Bean yet - or in some cases, Ice Cream Sandwich - but it's rumored that Android 4.2 will be making an appearance at a Google-hosted event next Monday. The codename "Key Lime Pie" has been making the rounds, although it's uncertain whether or not that's actually what Google is calling it.

What's 4.2 bring to the table? Specifics are scarce, so it's all left up to speculation at this point. Interestingly, it seems Google has taken the place of Apple in terms of keeping its secrets actually secret, although it could also be argued that the reason for the scarce details is that fewer people care about Android updates due to the fact that the roll-out for each is so slow, and often non-existent for a given device.

Nonetheless, also rumored is a Nexus 10 tablet which would likely ship with Android 4.2. Following in the footsteps of the Nexus 7, the 10-inch model codenamed "Manta" will feature an iPad 3-beating 2560x1600 resolution - though I use the term "beating" loosely.

At the same event, the Nexus 7 will also be given a slight refresh with the help of an HSPA+ 3G addition and also a storage bump. That storage bump makes a 32GB model the new 16GB, while the 16GB replaces the 8GB. Pricing will remain $249 for the beefier model and $199 for the smaller one. If you've recently picked up a Nexus 7, I feel for you. If you were planning to pick one up as a gift, definitely wait for the updated models to finally roll-out.

Cassano leads Inter to 2-0 win over Catania

By Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:31 p.m. ET Oct. 21, 2012

ROME (AP) - Inter Milan rejoined Lazio in third place in Serie A on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Catania.

Antonio Cassano opened the scoring in the 28th minute at the San Siro, heading in a pass from Esteban Cambiasso. Rodrigo Palacio secured the victory with a volley in the 85th.

Inter and Lazio trail leader Juventus by four points, with second-place Napoli one point ahead in second following a 2-0 loss at Juventus on Saturday. Also Saturday, Lazio beat struggling AC Milan 3-2.

Fiorentina is fifth, 10 points back, after a 1-1 draw at Chievo Verona.

Cyril Thereau gave Chievo the lead in the 17th and Gonzalo Rodriguez tied it for Fiorentina a minute later. Fiorentina striker Luca Toni hit the post at the end of the first half. The Tuscan club is yet to win away.

Parma beat 10-man Sampdoria with two goals from Amauri. Palermo and Torino drew 0-0, and 10-man Udinese edged promoted Pescara with a 53rd-minute goal from Maicosuel.

Atalanta celebrated its 105th anniversary with a 2-1 comeback win over last-place Siena, with goals from Luca Cigarini and Giacomo Bonaventura. Cagliari beat Bologna 1-0 to move out of the relegation zone.

---

LONDON (AP) - Everton lost ground on the Premier League's top three teams after being held to a 1-1 draw at last-place Queens Park Rangers, which is off to its worst start to a season in 21 years. QPR is without a win after eight games.

Everton, which finished a man down after Steven Pienaar was sent off, fell behind on a deflected strike by Junior Hoilett. But the team tied it when Sylvain Distin's header hit the post and rebounded in off the shoulder of QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Sunderland escaped with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle thanks to Demba Ba's 86th-minute own goal. That denied the visitors a victory after playing more than an hour with 10 men following Cheick Tiote's dismissal.

---

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Espanyol beat Rayo Vallecano 3-2 thanks to substitute Christian Stuani's injury-time winner, giving the struggling side its first victory through eight rounds of the Spanish league season.

Espanyol's Joan Verdu made up for his early error that led to Leonardo Carrilho's 11th-minute opener by scoring from a long pass by Victor Sanchez in the 37th. He added a second goal three minutes after halftime.

Carrilho scored again in the 63rd. The teams looked set to split the points with both reduced to 10 men after Rayo's Mikel Labaka and Espanyol's Diego Colotto were sent off.

But substitute Sergio Garcia, making his debut after returning from injury, picked out Stuani with a cross for the striker to head home.

Also, Miguel "Michel" Alfonso scored from long range three minutes from time to give Levante a 1-0 victory at Getafe.

---

BERLIN (AP) - Stuttgart won 1-0 win at Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga to end the home team's four-game unbeaten run.

Vedad Ibisevic beat goalkeeper Rene Adler in the 31st minute, allowing the visitors to win for just the second time this season.

Nuremberg ended its four-game losing streak with a 0-0 draw at home to Augsburg.

---

PARIS (AP) - Bafetimbi Gomis scored in the 57th minute, sending Lyon past Brest 1-0 and back into third place in the French league.

Gomis ran onto Steed Malbranque's pass and lobbed over the goalkeeper for his fifth league goal of the season.

Lyon is two points ahead of fourth-place Toulouse and one point behind Marseille and leader Paris Saint-Germain. But Marseille would move three points ahead of PSG and four clear of Lyon with a win away at Troyes later Sunday.

Ajaccio drew 0-0 with Bastia in Corsica in which both clubs finished with 10 men and opposing fans fought in the stands.

---

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) - Motherwell missed a chance to climb to third place in the Scottish Premier League by losing 1-0 to Hearts.

Danny Grainger scored from 30 yards in the 14th minute, giving Hearts its first victory at home since the opening day of the season. Motherwell came closest to scoring when Nicky Law's header was cleared off the line.

Motherwell is in sixth place, seven points behind league leader Celtic. Hearts moved up two places to eighth in the 12-team league.

Obama and Romney meet for final debate as race tightens

BOCA RATON, Florida (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney face off in front of the cameras for a final time on Monday as opinion polls show their battle for the White House has tightened to a dead heat.

With 15 days to go until the November 6 election, the two candidates turn to foreign policy for their third and last debate, which starts at 9 p.m. (0100 GMT on Tuesday).

The stakes are high, as the two candidates are tied at 46 percent each in the Reuters/Ipsos online daily tracking poll.

The debate will likely be the last time either candidate will be able to directly appeal to millions of voters - especially the roughly 20 pct who have yet to make up their minds or who could still switch their support.

Obama comes to this debate with several advantages. As sitting president, he has been deeply involved with national security and foreign affairs for the past three-and-a-half years. He can point to a number of successes on his watch, from the end of the Iraq war to the killing of Osama bin Laden.

But Romney will have many chances to steer the conversation back toward the sluggish U.S. economy, a topic on which voters see him as more credible. He will also try to use unease about a nuclear Iran and turmoil in Libya to sow doubts about Obama's leadership at home and abroad.

Romney launched his candidacy with an accusation that Obama was not representing U.S. interests aggressively enough, but after a decade of war voters have little appetite for further entanglements abroad. After a clumsy overseas trip in July, Romney will have to demonstrate to voters that he could ably represent the United States on the world stage.

"What he needs to do is get through this third debate by showing a close familiarity with the issues and a demeanor in foreign policy that is not threatening," said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University.

Presidential debates have not always been consequential, but this year they have had an impact.

Romney's strong performance in the first debate in Denver on October 3 helped him recover from a series of stumbles and wiped out Obama's advantage in opinion polls.

Obama fared better in their second encounter on October 16, but that has not helped him regain the lead.

The Obama campaign is now playing defense as it tries to limit Romney's gains in several of the battleground states that will decide the election.

Romney could have a hard time winning the White House if he does not carry Ohio. A new Quinnipiac/CBS poll shows Obama leading by 5 percentage points in the Midwestern state, but another by Suffolk University shows the two candidates tied there.

LAST-CHANCE DEBATE

More than 60 million viewers watched each of their previous two debates, but the television audience this time could be smaller as it will air at the same time as high-profile baseball and football games.

Much of the exchange, which takes place at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, will likely focus on the Middle East.

Campaigning in Canton, Ohio, on Monday, Vice President Joe Biden reminded voters of Obama's pledge to pull troops out of Afghanistan in the next two years and pointed out that Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan have made no such guarantees.

"They said, quote, it depends. Ladies and gentlemen, like everything with them, it depends," Biden said. "It depends on what day you find these guys."

At their second debate last week, the two presidential candidates clashed bitterly over Libya, a preview of what is to come on Monday evening. They argued over Obama's handling of the attack last month on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

The Obama administration first labeled the incident a spontaneous reaction to a video made in the United States that lampooned the Prophet Mohammad. Later, it said it was a terrorist assault on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

This shifting account, and the fact that Obama went on a campaign trip the day after the attack, has given Romney ammunition to use at Monday's debate.

"The statements were either misleading by intention or they were misleading by accident. Either way, though, he's got to get to the bottom of this," Romney adviser Dan Senor said on NBC's "Today" show.

Obama and his allies charge that Romney exploited the Benghazi attack for political points while officials were still accounting for the wellbeing of U.S. diplomats.

Regarding foreign policy overall, Obama's allies accuse Romney of relying on generalities and platitudes.

"It is astonishing that Romney has run for president for six years and never once bothered to put forward a plan to end the war in Afghanistan, for example, or to formulate a policy to go after al Qaeda," U.S. Senator John Kerry, the Democrats' 2004 presidential nominee, wrote in a memo released by the Obama campaign on Monday.

Romney has promised to tighten the screws over Iran's nuclear program and accused Obama of "leading from behind" as Syria's civil war expands. He also has faulted Obama for setting up a politically timed exit from the unpopular Afghanistan war, and accused him of failing to support Israel, an important ally in the Middle East.

The Republican challenger is likely to bring up a New York Times report from Saturday that said the United States and Iran had agreed in principle to hold bilateral negotiations to halt what Washington and its allies say is a plan by Tehran to develop nuclear weapons.

The 90-minute debate, moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS, will be divided into six segments: America's role in the world; the war in Afghanistan; Israel and Iran; the changing Middle East; terrorism; and China's rise.

Israeli PM: No limits on Jerusalem construction

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's prime minister vowed on Sunday to continue building in east Jerusalem, despite objections from Palestinians who claim the territory as capital of their hoped-for state.

Benjamin Netanyahu spoke Sunday after the European Union's foreign policy chief criticized plans to build 800 new apartments and a military college on contested land, which the international community considers to be under Israeli occupation.

"We are not imposing any restrictions on construction in Jerusalem" Netanyahu told his Cabinet. "It is our capital."

A top aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas promptly accused Netanyahu of deliberately destroying prospects for peace.

The Israeli leader's comment "comes in the context of the continuing destruction of the peace process and the two-state solution," Nabil Abu Rdeneh said.

The fate of Jerusalem lies at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Palestinians refuse to negotiate while Israel continues to build settlements in east Jerusalem and the West Bank, areas captured by the Jewish state in 1967.

Netanyahu has rejected the notion of partitioning the city.

Meanwhile, American academic Noam Chomsky made his first ever visit to the Gaza Strip, where he called on Israel to end its blockade of the Hamas-ruled territory.

The octogenarian Chomsky, an ardent critic of Israel who was banned from entering the country in 2010, entered Gaza through neighboring Egypt to attend a linguistics conference. While there, he accused the U.S. of allowing the Jewish state to act with impunity for its continuation of the blockade, which Israel imposed after the militant Islamist Hamas group violently seized control of Gaza in 2007.

The restrictions were loosened after an Israeli raid on a blockade-busting boat in 2009 killed nine Turkish activists, but there are still limits on movement, imports of raw materials, and exports.

Doomed Costa Concordia helpless within seconds, court told

GROSSETO, Italy (Reuters) - The doomed Costa Concordia liner steamed into rocks off the Italian island of Giglio so quickly that within seconds water was rushing into a 35 meter-long gash torn into the hull and nothing could be done to save it, a court heard on Tuesday.

The evidence was presented during a pre-trial hearing into the disaster during which expert witnesses said key pieces of equipment, including a sonar depth sounder, were switched off when the accident happened.

The Concordia's captain, Francesco Schettino, is accused of the manslaughter of 32 people, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship. He has admitted to making mistakes, but says he should not be the only one blamed.

His lawyers say that several aspects of the case need closer examination, including whether all the onboard safety and navigation equipment was working properly. They also say the ship's Indonesian helmsman may not have understood orders given by Schettino.

Much of the argument presented at the hearing this week has focused on possible wider failures that may have contributed to the loss of the giant liner, which capsized and sank on January 13 after being brought too close to shore during a maneuver known as a "salute".

The ship's equipment, crew training and safety procedures have all been criticized but the liner's operator, Costa Cruises, a unit of the U.S.-based Carnival Corp, has placed the blame squarely on Schettino.

"The size of the hole in the Concordia is enormous as was confirmed by the expert evidence which was discussed this morning," the company's lawyer Marco De Luca told reporters outside the closed-door hearing.

"It was also confirmed than within 40-50 seconds the ship was unmanageable because the systems went down immediately."

He said water rushed in so quickly that the company's crisis unit, in charge of handling the response to the accident from shore, had no time to do anything before the ship was lost.

SONAR EQUIPMENT OFF

However Schettino's lawyer Bruno Leporatti said despite the evidence presented in court, much remained to be established.

"Up to now, there have been declarations by the experts, who have given their interpretations and views, but the truth of what happened has not been established," he said.

A panel of court experts told the hearing that the sonar device had been off at the time of the shipwreck, according to people present in the hearing, which was closed to the public because the huge media interest could not be accommodated.

Leporatti also said onboard equipment, including emergency generators did not work at vital moments. "A series of instruments did not work and the experts haven't explained why, so we have to try to understand," he said.

The accident triggered a chaotic night-time evacuation of more than 4,000 passengers and crew on the rocky shoreline of the Tuscan island of Giglio. Thirty bodies have been recovered from the wreck and another two people remain unaccounted for.

Costa Cruises told the hearing that the ship had been equipped with more radar systems than needed, and that enough of them had been in operation to meet legal requirements.

Codacons, a consumer rights group that has been closely involved in the case, said more information was needed about the state of the ship's equipment before the disaster.

"All these aspects, had they been functional, may possibly have made up for the negative effects of Captain Schettino's actions and helped avoid the loss of human lives, even if the ship might have sunk nonetheless," said Giuliano Leuzzi, a lawyer for Codacons.

The ship itself remains on its side, balanced on a rocky shelf in full view of the harbor. Hundreds of divers and salvage engineers have begun the delicate operation of preparing the hulk for removal.

The pre-trial hearing will decide whether or not the charges against Schettino requested by prosecutors should stand and the case go to a full trial, expected next year.

Citigroup's CEO Pandit steps down

CNBC's Becky Quick and Joe Kernen, report Citigroup's Vikram Pandit is stepping down.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

In a move that stunned Wall Street, Citigroup's Vikram Pandit announced Tuesday he has stepped down as CEO of the banking giant and a member of its board.

The move is effective immediately.

The announcement, which came a day after Citigroup released solid earnings, also said that Chief Operating Officer John Havens, a close associate of Pandit, would step down.

Pandit, 55, will be replaced by Michael Corbat, who was previously Citi?s chief executive for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Pandit?s departure was bewildering to analysts, as it came just one day after the bank reported strong revenue growth in its latest financial quarter, even as the bank?s net income declined.

?It does seem strange to me that someone would step away after reporting better-than-expected numbers and certainly do a lot to reconfigure the company for going forward,? said Peter Jankovski, co-chief investment officer at Oakbrook Investments in Lisle, Il., said.

?I would have expected he wanted to stay around and see some of the fruits of his labors there,? he added.

Adam Sarhan, chief executive officer at Sarhan Capital in New York, said ?Pandit is leaving at the top of the game and leaving the company in great hands, but the timing of the move is shocking.?

?Why they didn?t announce it with the earnings is a question that needs to be answered,? he added.

Indian-born Pandit became CEO of Citigroup on Dec. 11, 2007. He is a graduate of Columbia University, where he earned a MBA in 1980, followed by a Ph.D. in finance in 1986.

Matt McCormick, a banking analyst and portfolio manager Cincinnati-based Bahl & Gaynor, said Pandit had struggled to establish an identity for Citigroup.

?I would say ultimately he was unsuccessful in having people know what Citigroup stands for and what it does,? he said. ?He was not beloved by Wall Street. He was the accidental president. He was thrust into that position; he?s a hedge fund guy.?

Investment banker Richard Christopher Whalen of Tangent Capital Partners said Pandit?s departure is a ?good moment for Citigroup.?

?He should have left years ago,? he told CNBC, adding that the bank is doing the right thing by ?reaching inside? for Pandit?s successor.

In a memo to Citigroup employees Tuesday, incoming CEO Corbat he is ?both humbled by the confidence the Board has placed in me, and excited by the prospect of working closely with our management team and the Board to take our Company forward.?

?Over the last five years, Vikram has led Citi back to its roots as a bank, building on our legacy of serving clients and helping them on their journey from ambition to achievement,? Corbat added. ?I believe the fundamentals we have in place today are strong and that we are on the right path.?

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship announces winners

The African Leadership Network, the membership network of new generation leaders in Africa, and Omidyar Network, a philanthropic investment firm, on Friday, 12 October 2012, announced Dr. Richard John Pelwana Maponya as the winner of 2012 Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship Lifetime Achievement Award.

Maponya was honoured at the 2012 Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship ceremony, which is part of the African Leadership Network's Annual Gathering in Accra, Ghana. The award captured Maponya's achievements in his seven-decade career in entrepreneurship, and consolidates his distinction as an iconic African entrepreneur.

During his acceptance speech at the awards, Maponya said "At the time I started my first business in the 1950s, it was difficult for a young African to dream of political freedom, let alone entrepreneurial success.

The African economy is growing

Today, Africa is free and democracy is taking root. The African economy is growing, and presenting opportunities for entrepreneurs that at my time were a pipe dream. I am pleased to accept this award, as it is a reminder of what we can do as individuals and collectively, to create wealth for Africa and a better life for our people. There is nothing to stop Africans from doing what they want to do now."

Dr. Maponya began his entrepreneurial career in his twenties in the 1940s, and over the last seven decades has built a retail empire in South Africa. Among other outstanding achievements, Maponya's business successes include building the Maponya Mall, one of South Africa's biggest shopping malls with over 200 shops in Soweto.

Maponya's career has seamlessly blended entrepreneurship and social involvement, and apart from building a chain of successful businesses, has throughout his career served in key business leadership roles. He is the Founding President of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, is a trustee of the Nelson Mandela Children Fund and sits on several other boards.

"Dr. Maponya is a hugely inspiring businessman who has served as a beacon for different generations of entrepreneurs over the last seven decades," comments Fred Swaniker, CEO and co-founder of the African Leadership Network.

"We are deeply inspired and humbled by Dr. Maponya's great achievements. The story of his life is a powerful reminder of the fact that for the entrepreneur, there are always opportunities, even when others might only see challenges. His life is testimony to the resilience, patience, determination and focus that makes a good entrepreneur. Dr. Maponya is an inspiring role model to many entrepreneurs in Africa, and is a brilliant example of the kind of leaders that will build wealth and prosperity in Africa."
